So I was scrolling through ArtStation the other day, looking at all these gorgeous ZBrush sculpts. Millions of polygons. Perfect anatomy. And then I clicked on one artist's portfolio and saw they'd been looking for work for 8 months. That's when it hit me: we're drowning in tutorials that teach us how to sculpt, but not how to get hired.
Here's the thing. Studios don't hire sculptors. They hire people who can take a sculpt and turn it into a game asset that runs at 60fps. And that's a completely different skill set.
I've spent the last few months digging through the three main tutorial tracks that dominate game art education: ZBrush sculpting courses, Blender pipeline series, and Substance Painter deep-dives. I've talked to technical artists, read spec sheets, and even tried a few myself. Here's what I found.
The three options, and who each one is for
ZBrush sculpting tutorials are for artists who want to work on characters, creatures, or anything organic. ZBrush is the industry standard for organic sculpting, and it's been used on Fortnite, God of War, Uncharted, and Assassin's Creed (Maxon acquires Pixologic). If your goal is a character artist role at a AAA studio, this is the track. But here's the catch: most ZBrush tutorials teach you to sculpt, not to ship. That's where the job is.
Blender pipeline tutorials are for indie developers, generalists, and anyone who needs to own the whole chain. Blender is free, open-source, and covers modeling, sculpting, UV mapping, texturing, rigging, animation, and rendering (Blender 4.0 Release). A good Blender tutorial series takes you from blockout to engine import without switching apps. That's a real advantage when you're a team of one. The tradeoff is depth: Blender's sculpting is capable, but it isn't ZBrush, and a tutorial that tries to teach everything often teaches nothing to a hireable level.
Substance Painter and Designer tutorials are for texture artists and anyone who wants their models to look finished. Substance Painter lets you paint materials directly on the 3D model and export maps to Unity, Unreal, or Godot (Adobe Substance 3D Painter). Designer goes further with node-based procedural materials. These tutorials assume you already have a UV-unwrapped low-poly mesh. If you don't, you're learning step five of a seven-step process.
Criteria 1: Does it teach the high-to-low poly pipeline?
This is the criterion that separates a hobby tutorial from a professional one. The modern game asset workflow is a high-poly-to-low-poly pipeline: block out the shape, sculpt a dense high-poly mesh, retopologize a low-poly game mesh, unwrap UVs, bake detail onto the low-poly, then texture and integrate into the engine (game art pipeline).
ZBrush tutorials usually cover the sculpt. They often skip retopology or treat it as a ten-minute afterthought. Blender pipeline series tend to cover all seven steps, but sometimes at a shallow level. Substance tutorials cover baking and texturing, which are steps five and six. None of the three, on its own, gives you the full chain at professional depth. That's the honest answer.
Quick tip: Before you buy any tutorial, check whether it includes a retopology module. If it doesn't, you're paying for half a pipeline.
Criteria 2: Does it teach you to hit a real asset budget?
Technical artists set asset budget spec sheets: an LOD0 character at roughly 15,000 triangles with 2048x2048 textures and 2-3 draw calls, scaling down through LOD3 at 800 triangles, with default compression formats like BC7 for PC, ASTC for mobile, and BC5 for normal maps (technical artist roles).
Here's the test. If a tutorial has you sculpt a character and never asks you to count triangles, it's not preparing you for a studio. A 15,000-triangle LOD0 sounds generous until you realize your high-poly sculpt might be 8 million polygons. The retopology step is where that gap gets closed, and it's the step most tutorials rush.
Blender tutorials that include a game-ready export step tend to do better here, because the instructor has to confront the triangle count. ZBrush tutorials that end at the sculpt don't. Substance tutorials assume someone else already solved this problem.
Criteria 3: Does it teach UVs and baking properly?
This is where most tutorial tracks fall apart. Texture baking transfers high-poly surface detail such as normals and ambient occlusion onto the low-poly mesh's UV maps, and the low-poly mesh must be UV-unwrapped first (texture baking).
A tutorial that skips UV theory produces artists who can't fix a seam. UV coordinates are stored per vertex, and the texture spans from (0,0) at the lower-left to (1,1) at the upper-right (UV mapping). That sounds basic until you're the one trying to fit a character's face, hands, and boots into a single 2048x2048 sheet without visible stretching.
Substance Painter tutorials handle the painting side well but often assume clean UVs. Blender series that include RizomUV or Blender's own UV tools give you the full picture. ZBrush courses vary wildly. ZRemesher can generate a quad-dominant mesh in one click, but automatic retopology isn't animation-friendly for a hero character's face.
Criteria 4: Does it prepare you for the engine?
A tutorial that ends at the render is a tutorial that ends too early. Game art lives in the engine. If you're learning Unreal, you need to understand that Nanite imports film-quality meshes with hundreds of millions or billions of polygons and removes polygon budgets, draw count budgets, and the need to hand-author LODs (Unreal Engine documentation). If you're learning Unity, you need to know that dynamic batching only works for small meshes of roughly 225-300 vertices.
None of the three tutorial tracks teach engine integration deeply. That's a separate skill. But the best ones at least show the export settings and the first import.

Not because Blender is the best tool at every step — it isn't — but because it's the only track that forces you through the entire high-to-low poly workflow, including retopology and UVs, in one place. Blender is free, which means the money you save can go toward a ZBrush subscription later.
Here's the specific recommendation. If you have zero game art experience, start with a Blender pipeline series that includes a game-ready character project. Finish it. Then take a focused ZBrush sculpting course to deepen your organic work. Then a Substance Painter course to make your textures look professional. That sequence matches the actual pipeline order and builds skills in the order a studio needs them.
- Choose ZBrush first if you already have a job offer contingent on character sculpting and you need to level up fast.
- Choose Blender first if you're self-taught, indie, or switching careers and need the whole pipeline in one place.
- Choose Substance first if you already model well but your textures look flat and you can't figure out why.
The uncomfortable truth is that most tutorial money is wasted on sculpting courses that never mention triangle counts. That's a real career. Treat your tutorial choices like a career decision, not a hobby. Finish one full pipeline, then specialize.
